Nato kuitenkin saattoi olla Georgian kriisin välitön syy. Georgiahan oli saanut Ukrainan ohella lupauksen Natolta, että se tulevaisuudessa pääsee jäsenkandidaatiksi. Se aivan ilmeisesti rohkaisi Saakaśviliä hakemaan Etelä-Ossetian (ja aivan ilmeisesti myöhemmin myös Abhaasian) jäätyneisiin konflikteihin sotilaallista ratkaisua siinä uskossa, että Venäjä ei uskalla reagoida.
Georgian kriisi on saanut monet kirjoittajat tekemään hätäisiä johtopäätöksiä myös koskien Suomen ulko- ja turvallisuuspolitiikkaa. Kirjoituksissa Venäjä on nähty imperialistisena ja aggressiivisena suurvaltana, joka ei pääse irti voiman käytön obsessiostaan. Tämän vuoksi kirjoittajat suosittavat - kuka selkeämmin, kuka peitetymmin - että Suomenkin tulisi hyvän sään aikana hakea Naton jäsenyyttä. Voisiko kyky johtopäätösten tekoon pahemmin pettää?
